Tanya Clarke, born and raised in Kingston Jamaica, graduated from The University of the West Indies Medical School with distinction in 1998, the first female and second person to do so during the 50 year history of UWI Medical School.
She delivered the Valedictory address at the Golden milestone history of her medical school.
Her career has been decorated by many firsts, awards and excellence.
She was the first recipient of the Prime Minister’s Youth Award for Academic Excellence, the first recipient of the Lady Bustamante Scholarship and the recipient of the Vice Chancellor’s award for the best academic undergraduate performance across all campuses and all faculties.
She was the first UWI graduate to do residency at Yale University in General Surgery. Quickly she realized her passion was indeed Internal Medicine, which she pursued and completed in 2005, topping her cohort with the Award for excellence in Medical Education and Research during residency training.
Subsequently she served ten years at her medical school at The University of The West Indies, Mona, as a tenured lecturer, during which she studied Medical Education at the University of Dundee, Pre performance evaluation of athletes at the Olympic Headquarters in Lausanne Switzerland and served on several boards : Curriculum, Ethics and Residency and Medical Students training.
She volunteered her services to the JAAA and the Jamaica Football Federation for several years during which she was the Medical Director of The Racers Track and Field Club. She also found time to conceptualize a multi speciality Private Clinic : Platinum Health Care where she offered her services.
She joined the University of Miami as Asst. Professor in May 2015 where she served on the Executive Curriculum Committee, Director for the Sub Internship program, Phase 3 lead, OSCE committee, Diversity and Inclusion and Society of Black Physicians.
She has given talks around the world and has a wide portfolio of published research in peer reviewed journals.
She is a Fellow of The American College of Physicians.
She is the President of the South Florida Chapter of the UWIMAA and the organizer of this upcoming conference.
A mother of four children, runner and lover of sports.
